Every time I swim with manatees, I leave with two completely different feelings. One is pure joy. They are some of the gentlest, sweetest animals I have ever encountered. Curious, peaceful, and completely innocent. But the other feeling is heartbreak. So many of the manatees here carry massive scars across their backs from boat strikes. Some have survived being hit multiple times. You can literally see the pain humans have caused written across their bodies. And the saddest part is… they don’t u
